Wire framing is used to create a rough sketch design of an application or website and this work requires a lot of precision. However, this can only be done with the help of a pixel ruler. Therefore, I decided to make my own pixel ruler. This is because currently sold pixel rulers have a large scale which cannot be used on letter size paper. Also, the material used to make these rulers were either wood or metal creating an uncomfortable working experience.

I have never constructed a pixel ruler or a ruler for that matter. Hence, I researched the best material for such a ruler and decided to use acrylic. I also researched the techniques on laser printing because laser cutters are used to cut the ruler and to engrave the various measurements on the ruler. Acrylic has very different versions such as color and thickness. I tested on about nine different forms and had to do some consumer testing on its use in various situations.

I decided to make a clear, 1/16th of an inch thick ruler and decided to use the laser printer to engrave the measurements on the underside of the ruler. I used smartphones and tablets to compare various lengths to make a rough pixel ruler that incorporated the landscape and portrait orientation. The length is 7 and a ¾ inch, the width is 1 and 1/8 inch, and the height is 1/16th of an inch. I created the size so that it fits in a pencil case for portability.
